Purpose: Count the number of items in one or more bins at the same physical location.

Scenario: An employee has submitted a purchase requisition for 10,000 pencils. Before moving forward, the team needs to verify the actual stock on hand. Performing an item count allows the warehouse team to check all bins where pencils are stored and confirm the quantity. Unlike a bin count, which requires counting all items within a bin, an item count focuses only on the specified item—in this case, pencils.

Key terms:

Bin - This is a physical location of an item. It can be a shelf, a building or a person.
